BBC Breakfast presenter Carol Kirkwood, 58, made her former co-star giggle during their chat on his new podcast Paws and Claws, after she compared her weather forecasting studio to a “broom cupboard”. While the flagship BBC program is filmed up north at their Salford studios in Manchester, Carol is based in London at Broadcasting House, where she transmits her sometimes gloomy, sometimes pleasant reports from.
But she revealed she hasn’t got much room to play with, as the small space is quite cramped.
She explained her morning routine to Bill, who was interested to hear what preparations she has to take before and inbetween her weather reports on-air.
And after receiving a letter from a viewer who wondered how much time she had to kill while she waited until her next slot, Carol wanted to make it clear she is one very busy lady.
“It’s a very busy schedule in the morning and it’s quite a quick turn around as well,” she said, revealing the first thing she does is check the studio is “working”.
“I’m in there more or less by myself! And the weather studio we have in London is like a broom cupboard and it’s self operated,” she said.

“So if I press a button with my name on it, the lighting is correct for me, the voice levels are correct for me and the camera height is also the right height for me.”
While many may not have been aware that Carol wasn’t in Manchester with the rest of the studio team, Bill was fascinated to get an insight into her everyday experience.
But her hectic mornings don’t stop there.
The meteorologist then has to check the computers are up and running before drafting her weather story for the day before heading to meetings.
“I then have a conference and we discuss the weather of the day and what we think might happen or might not happen, as the forecast may have changed from what we were saying previous days, and then when that’s all good and ready I go to make up!
A few sound checks later and she’s off on-air, giving the nation what they need, come rain or shine.
But more fool anyone who thinks her job is easy, Bill made that mistake and was quickly scolded for his comments.
“It’s pretty easy this weather malarkey, it’s all on a screen you’re pointing at!” he claimed.
He proceeded to run off a few weather quotes, referring to the technical lingo as Carol groaned in the background.
“I remember you and I doing the weather together at one point,” she recalled, before hitting back at his insinuation that weather forecasting is easy work.
