World War 3 fears: Iran poised to bolster nuclear power amid US deal row

Iranian lawmakers voiced their support on Tuesday by releasing a seven-point statement. The Islamic Consultative Assembly’s Commission of National Security and Foreign Policy highlighted their confidence in Iran’s ability to win the dispute with the US.

The argument is over whether the US had the right to demolish the 2015 nuclear agreement it abandoned in 2018.

Iran also set out measures to prepare themselves for “the illegal activation of the trigger mechanism” which would see the renewal of pre-deal sanctions.

The statement urged the Iran Atomic Energy Organisation to “immediately return all nuclear activity” to levels gained before the deal.

The agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was reached in 2015 between Iran and the United Nations Security Council of which the US is a member.

The Iranian legislators urged to activate the IR4, IR6, IR8 centrifuges in order to supply enrich uranium at 190,000 work units.

They want “to accelerate the construction of nuclear propellants in order to equip our country’s navy”.

Iranian naval leaders have previously urged for the development of nuclear-powered submarines to prevent US military activity in the Persian Gulf.

The area is a critical spot for tensions between Iran and the US.

Only one other country, the Dominican Republic, backed the US motion to extend the Iranian arms embargo which will expire in October under the nuclear deal.

China and Russia, who signed the nuclear deal, rejected the US extension proposal.

Fellow signatories, France, Germany, the UK and eight other countries, chose to abstain.

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, condemned the defeat and said “failure to act decisively of international peace and security is inexcusable”.

He said the US had support from Israel and six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

But Qatar has said it opposed the weapons restriction extension.

Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN said the defeat showed evidence of “the US’ isolation”.

In a tweet, he wrote: “Council’s message: ‘NO to UNILATERALISM.’ The US must learn from this debacle.

“Its attempt to ‘snapback’ sanctions is illegal, and was rejected by int’l community, as was evident today.”

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said US officials “knew what the vote was going to be but we’ll be doing a snapback.”
