Naga Munchetty: BBC star recalls embarrassing first date mishap 'If you can beat that!'

Naga Munchetty, 45, confessed her very own first date horror with her first boyfriend back when she was 17. She explained her mum was “quite strict” when she was younger and she “wasn’t allowed” a boyfriend.

But when she reached an acceptable age, the BBC Breakfast presenter was full of first date nerves, especially the thought of her mum meeting him for the first time.

“He was a lovely gentleman, he came to the house to pick me up and we were going out on a date and I was desperate for my mum not to get to the door first,” she laughed.

“So, I got ready – I’d been ready for ages – and I got to the top of the stairs and the doorbell rang.”

Naga cringed as she remembered her mum, in true mum fashion, made a b-line for the door to meet her date.

“My mum had charged there first and opened the door and saw this lovely young man,” she said before revealing the embarassment that happened next.

“I was at the top of the stairs and immediately just tumbled down them, butt first all the way down!” she sighed, picturing the humiliation all over again.

The BBC star remembered the accident had taken her date by surprise, whereas her mum not so much.

“This poor boy just looked at me open mouthed and my mum just said: ‘What are you so excited about? It’s only him, why are you making a big drama about it?’

Naga is now happily married to husband James Haggar, after the pair tied the knot in 2007.

The BBC star recently opened up about how they spent their time during lockdown and keeping fit was at the top of their lists.

And while running has become somewhat of a passion for them both, the TV presenter admitted she prefers to run “separately”.

Speaking to BBC colleague Louise Minchin and Annie Emmerson on their Her Spirit podcast, Naga said: “Now, it’s interesting.

“During lockdown, we do run together, and James started running again and funnily enough he’s had a couple of calf injuries, and just this morning we were sat out in the garden, and he was just saying, ‘I’m desperate to get out running’.”

She continued: “I never thought he’d say that. I used to have to drag him out before lockdown. If we went to the gym and I’d run, he would do weights and refuse to run and now he’s out there.”

But she explained that she likes to listen to music and be in her own little bubble rather than running as a duo.

“When I run, I have my headphones in, brilliant music, and I don’t run side by side, I run in front because I want to be on my own.

“So even though I’m with him, and he’s there, we run separately because it’s my time.”

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
