The Green Homes Grant is due to launch soon, meaning homeowners can get their hands on thousands of pounds worth of subsidised home improvements. The scheme is part of the Government’s coronavirus recovery plan, with the dual aim of making the UK more energy efficient and to get the British public to spend more to get the economy going.

The Green Homes Grant gives eligible households vouchers up to £5,000 towards the cost of energy-efficient improvements.

The scheme will allow homeowners and landlords to apply for a voucher that will fund at least two-thirds of the cost of hiring tradespeople to upgrade the energy performance of their homes.

The grant will cover thousands of homes across the UK and is a push to get the country to spend less on energy and help the environment.

It is also coming out now to help boost the economy during the coronavirus pandemic by creating jobs.

The Government has said households will be able to save thousands on their energy bills over the years if the improvements are made.

More than 600,000 homes have now been revealed to be eligible for the Grant which will support some 100,000 jobs in green construction and could help families save up to £600 a year on their energy bills.

Heating buildings accounts for almost a fifth of UK greenhouse gas emissions and reducing carbon dioxide from homes will be essential to reaching net-zero by 2050.

For most homeowners, the vouchers will be worth about two-thirds of the cost of the energy-efficient improvements, up to a maximum of £5,000 per household.

There are also boosted £10,000 vouchers for low-income households, where the homeowner won’t need to pay anything towards improvement costs.

This will be for those receiving at least one income-based or disability benefit.

To qualify for the scheme, you’ll need to be installing at least one of the following “primary” improvements:

  • Insulation, including solid wall, cavity wall, under-floor, loft, or roof insulation.
  • Low carbon heating, such as air source or ground source heat pumps, or solar thermal systems.

Who is eligible for the grant?

The Government has confirmed all owner-occupied homes, including long-leaseholders and shared ownership properties, will be eligible to use the general £5,000 voucher scheme.

Landlords of both private rented and social domestic housing will be eligible to use the scheme, along with park homeowners.

New build domestic and commercial properties, unfortunately, cannot get the grant.

The Government has not confirmed whether or not the grant is limited to a certain number of households, but the Treasury has confirmed £2billion has been put aside for the project.

Applicants will also have to complete an online application for one of the recommended home improvements.

It is likely this will be through the Government website although this has not been confirmed.

They will have to get a quote and approve it before being given the voucher to spend, which will start to be issued from the end of September.

The Government says households will be offered a list of accredited local tradespeople in their area who are registered with the scheme – and only these tradespeople can carry out the improvement works to your home.

To be part of the scheme, tradespeople must register for TrustMark or Microgeneration Certification Scheme accreditation.
