Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to discover something big about the Glazers

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done his part. The Manchester United manager was given the task of steering the club back into the Champions League and he’s succeeded. Now he wants backing in the transfer window – and he’s about to find out just how serious the Glazers are about winning the Premier League title.

For years, now, the Glazers have come under the cosh.

They’re unpopular figures at Manchester United, accused of not caring enough to help the Red Devils win the Premier League title that fans are determined to see brought back to Old Trafford.

Despite this, they’ve stayed in power. The green and gold scarf campaign didn’t get them to budge – David Beckham even wore one when he played for AC Milan – and neither did the vile, over-the-top chants that were aimed their way earlier this season.

The Glazers, for their part, can insist they’ve given things a go.

They have funded mega deals for United in the shapes of Angel Di Maria, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and co. They also spent £80million on Harry Maguire last summer, landing the England international from Leicester.

But, now, Solskjaer is about to find out just how serious they are.

If the Red Devils are serious about challenging for the title, then the Glazers need to bankroll any deal for the England international – and with speed.

Furthermore, Solskjaer also wants a central midfielder.

Aston Villa are currently demanding £75million to part ways with Jack Grealish, whose goal last weekend kept them in the Premier League.

But while that’s a lot of money, it would be another major statement of intent from United.

Solskjaer is also eyeing a defender if the budget can stretch to it, with Tyrone Mings and Alessio Romagnoli both highly-rated behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

And the Glazers can’t afford to be stingy at a time where the Red Devils are well positioned to challenge for the major trophies again.

They’ve previously told Woodward to walk away from deals if the opposition is demanding too much money, like they did with Maguire and Toby Alderweireld in the summer of 2018.

There was a sense United were on their way back to the top again that year but they failed to back Mourinho and have suffered as a result.

Now, Solskjaer is about to discover just how much they care.

If not, and the Norwegian doesn’t get the players he wants, then the club run the risk of more mediocrity in the months and years ahead.
