Trump impeachment: US President faces calls to be removed from office over Tweet

Steven Calabresi, Co-founder of Federalist Society, opposed Donald Trump’s impeachment last year. However, he now thinks the President’s tweet on Thursday criticising mail-in voting and bringing up the idea of postponing the election day has crossed the line. Mr Calabresi wrote an op-ed in The New York Times saying: “Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats’ assertion that President Trump is a fascist.”

“But this latest tweet is fascistic and is itself grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment again by the House of Representatives and his removal from office by the Senate.”

It was on Thursday morning when Donald Trump tweeted that universal mail-in voting, “2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history”.

“A great embarrassment to the USA.

“Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”

Trump’s allegations that mail-in voting leads to increased fraud are unsubstantiated.

Mail-in voting has increased due to voters’ concerns about contracting coronavirus by going to the polls.

Mr Calabresi, who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 has voted for Republican in every Presidential election since 1980.

He added that elected officials need to keep President Trump in check.

The long-time Republican supporter said: “President Trump needs to be told by every Republican in Congress that he cannot postpone the federal election.”

He added: “Anyone who says otherwise should never be elected to Congress again.”

However, Steven Calabresi is not the only Conservative who disagrees with Donald Trump.

Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader, said the November 3rd election date is not yet set in stone.

He made this remark during a television interview.

Whilst, Kevin McCarthy, House Republican Leader made it clear that “never in the history of the federal elections have we ever not held an election and we should go forward with our election.”

The Federalist Society pushes for an originalist and textualist interpretation of the Constitution.
