Donald Trump’s son suspended from Twitter over COVID-19 tweet

US President Donald Trump’s son will not be able to tweet for 12 hours after posting a video of a doctor claiming the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine is a cure for coronavirus.

A spokesman said: “The tweet is in violation of our COVID-19 misinformation policy.

“The account will be locked until the account owner removes the tweet.”

Twitter’s communications team confirmed the US President’s son has not been permanently suspended.

It said: “This account has not been permanently suspended.

“Per the screenshot, the tweet requires deletion because it violates our rules (sharing misinformation on COVID-19), and the account will have limited functionality for 12 hours.”

The US President’s son’s account is still visible to other Twitter users but the tweet has been removed.

He can still browse Twitter and send direct messages but he is unable to tweet, retweet or like posts.

The US Food and Drug Administration last month revoked its emergency use authorisation for hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus.

The US President previously said he had used the anti-malaria drug with no side effects.

Speaking this morning, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr Anthony Fauci said: “The overwhelming prevailing clinical trials that have looked at the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine have indicated that it is not effective in coronavirus disease.”

It comes after the social media company has clashed with the US President in recent months.

Twitter removed a campaign video, which included music from the group Linkin Park, earlier this month following a copyright complaint.

The social media company also removed an image he tweeted on June 30 because of a copyright complaints from the New York Times whose photographer took the photo.

And in May Twitter put a warning on one of the US President’s tweets about protests in Minneapolis saying it violated rules about “glorifying violence”.
