TV chef Gordon Ramsay has claimed the coronavirus crisis will ‘flush away the unwanted’ in his industry amid ‘very testing times’.

There have been predictions that 30,000 pubs and restaurants may close for good – despite Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s efforts to prop up the industry with next month’s Eat Out to Help Out discount scheme.
‘What’s going to happen is the good are going to survive, the below average are going to fall to the wayside,’ Ramsay said in a BBC podcast with fitness star Joe Wicks.
Ramsay added: ‘I think it’s exciting times because it’s flushed away the unwanted, you know. It’s very testing times. But this is not about making money. This is about giving your staff and your customers confidence that you’re backing them.’
Under Sunak’s initiative, diners will be able to get 50 per cent off their meals and non-alcoholic drinks on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in August – up to a maximum of £10 per customer at participating restaurants and pubs.
The businesses will be able to claim back the value of the discount from the Government.
Ramsay, 53, said: ‘We’ve got a tough corner to turn with the restaurants reopening. A lot of anxiety. So there is a lot to play for and that’s what keeps me on my toes.
‘I’ve always dealt with things head on. When you let things sit and rest and fester, the actual situation becomes ten times more serious.’
