The Government has mandated face masks and coverings in the UK starting next week, as officials continue their all-out assault on COVID-19. Cases are now dwindling, but as the country reopens and strives to undo devastating economic damage, it risks courting a second wave. People have a range of options open to them when it comes to face coverings, some of which may offer more protection than others.
Which face coverings should people avoid?
The Government has asked people to wear a face-covering while they shop from July 24 on threat of a fine.
People must ensure they enter any retailer with fabric over their face, which doesn’t have to be a surgical mask, now in high demand for key workers.
Officials have not endorsed any one form but advised the public to use thick and breathable fabrics, possibly with multiple layers.

Many of the most popular coverings – such as scarfs and bandanas – may prove a vital fashion statement but end up near useless.
Speaking to The Times, Sean Nutley, a facemask design specialist for PPE workplace supplier Lemon Worldwide, revealed what to look for when finding a mask.
He said: “You are aiming for as few gaps as possible, which is more difficult if you have a bushy beard, a big nose or a double chin, so you really need to check it is the right size for you.
“You should consider adjustable loops and straps, curved masks that are shaped to your face and may fit more snugly, or masks with in-built metal nose wires that help to keep the covering in place and are particularly useful if you wear glasses and find they get steamed up in a mask.”
