Following a horror few weeks for Wigan after entering administration at the beginning of the month, they finally had something to smile about on Tuesday after thumping Hull 8-0 in the Championship.

MANCHESTER UNITED 9-0 IPSWICH (MARCH 4, 1995)
There was complete despair for Ipswich at Old Trafford back in 1995 as they surrendered to a 9-0 defeat against Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.
Andy Cole led the way for the Red Devils by bagging a remarkable five goals. Mark Hughes also netted twice for the hosts while Paul Ince and Roy Keane added to the humiliation for Ipswich.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-9 LEICESTER (OCTOBER 25, 2019)
In October last year, Southampton were hammered 9-0 in their own backyard and it looked like the end of the road for Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez both scored hat-tricks at St Mary’s while Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison also got their name on the scoresheet as the Foxes ran riot in the pouring rain against 10-man Southampton.
But despite the horror show, the Saints have since bounced back ever so impressively from what looked like potential relegation to sitting a comfortable 12th in the Premier League.
TOTTENHAM 9-1 WIGAN (NOVEMBER 22, 2009)
This time, Wigan were on the receiving end of a hammering after going down 9-1 at White Hart Lane 11 years ago following a second-half blitz.
Jermain Defoe scored five times for Tottenham in the second half alone while Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar also found the target.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 12-0 LEICESTER (APRIL 21, 1909)
Nottingham Forest annihilated Midlands rival Leicester 12-0 in the old first division back in April 1909.
The display of the Leicester players was so appalling that the Football League ordered an enquiry, although no further action was taken after it turned out several of the already relegated side had attended one of their team-mate’s weddings the night before.
ASTON VILLA 10-0 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY (OCTOBER 5, 1912)
Villa thrashed the Owls 10 thanks to five goals from Harry Hampton, two from Clem Stephenson, a brace from Joe Bache and a strike through Harold Halse.
Villa finished runners-up to Sunderland that season while Sheffield Wednesday came third despite the mauling they received at Villa Park.
Other thrashings of the same scoreline in the old first division include Villa beating Burnley 10-0 in 1925, while Leicester buried Portsmouth (1928) and Sheffield United beat Burnley (1929).

NEWCASTLE 13-0 NEWPORT COUNTY (OCTOBER 5, 1946)
Newcastle hammered Newport County 13-0, with Len Shackleton grabbing a remarkable double hat-trick (although one of the goals might have been classed as an own goal in today’s world).
ARSENAL 12-0 LOUGHBOROUGH (MARCH 12, 1900)
120 years ago, the Gunners – known then as ‘Woolwich Arsenal’ – demolished Loughborough by 12 goals to nil. Ralph Gaudie scored a hat-trick that day for the hosts.
BIRMINGHAM 12-0 DONCASTER ROVERS (APRIL 11, 1903)
It was Birmingham’s turn – then known as ‘Small Heath’ – to enjoy a rampage three years after, overcoming Doncaster Rovers 12-0.
LEAGUE ONE/SECOND DIVISION
STOCKPORT COUNTY 13-0 HALIFAX TOWN (JANUARY 6, 1934)
Halifax only went into the break 2-0 behind in the third division contest but then Stockport really turned on the style in the second half – adding 11 more to their ridiculous tally.
CHESTER CITY 12-0 YORK CITY (FEBRUARY 1, 1936)
On February 1, it was a record-equalling high scoring day in the Football League with 209 goals being recorded in the 44 matches played.
As well as Chester thrashing York 12-0, Chesterfield overcame Crewe Alexandra 6-5 away. There were also six goals each for Coventry, Walsall, Watford, West Brom and six more clubs scored 5 apiece.
LUTON TOWN 12-0 BRISTOL ROVERS (APRIL 13, 1936)
Luton crushed their opposition 12-0 thanks to goal-scoring hero Joe Payne.
Payne netted an astonishing 10 times for his side that day – and it remains the record number of goals scored by one individual in a league match.

OLDHAM ATHLETIC 11-0 SOUTHPORT (DECEMBER 26, 1962)
At a snow covered Boundary Park, Oldham smashed Southport 12-0. They were winning 7-0 by half-time with Bert Lister grabbing two before the break and adding another four in the second half.
DONCASTER ROVERS 10-0 DARLINGTON (JANUARY 25, 1964)
Doncaster steam-rolled their way to a 10-0 victory thanks to four goals from Alfie Hale, while Colin Booth (2), Keith Ripley (2), Dennis Windross and Albert Broadbent also got on the scoresheet.
HARTLEPOOL UNITED 10-1 BARROW (APRIL 4, 1959)
Hartlepool recorded a stunning 10-1 victory over Barrow at home – with each of the five man forward line getting in on the act.
