While hopes were raised that some big PS5 price and pre-order news could be announced this week, nothing has surfaced yet to give us a clue at what the final price tag might be. The week isn’t over yet, and fans can still hope for some kind of surprise announcement from Sony. Hopes were raised by recent reports of something coming this week, along with the Amazon PS5 page being updated.
However, according to Fortune, nothing has changed with the PlayStation 5 section of the Amazon site since June.
So for now, there isn’t much to report on how much the PS5 will cost, or when gamers will be able to pre-order.
While there are still big blanks regarding the price of the PS5, there has been some encouraging news that Sony is ramping up production of its new console.
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony has now doubled production of the PS5 to 10 million units this year.
This is reportedly in connection with the long term effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has already seen a boost in the demand for gaming at home.
Unfortunately, while Sony is boosting its console output to try and be ready for increased demand later this year, the chances are that not all the order will be ready in time.
A source told Bloomberg: “Even with a boost to manufacturing, Sony may still be unable to put enough units on store shelves in the coming year-end holiday season due to shipping constraints, the people said.
“A large proportion of Sony’s consoles are made in China and sent out via sea around the world.
“It takes months for shipments to travel from China to the U.S. and Europe via ocean lines, and Nintendo Co. earlier this year had trouble refilling stock of its popular Switch console for this reason.
“Sony began PS5 mass production in June and, under the latest plan, expects to assemble 5 million units by the end of September and another 5 million between October and December.”
And as you might expect, output has also been increased for the DualSense controller to match the new console schedule.
It’s unclear at this time if there will be shortage issues when it comes to the release of the PS5.
Microsoft and Nintendo are both in the same boat and are likely to face similar issues with the Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch.
While the Switch is already available to buy, the Xbox Series X and PS5 will be new products that have yet to be given release dates.
It’s expected that they will be on shelves by October, but until the tech giants confirm their final plans, gamers will be left waiting.
For now, Amazon’s, and all other major retailer pages, remain with a solid price for the PS5 or Xbox Series X.
