ARSENAL 2-1 LIVERPOOL

HT: Well… despite being second-best for almost all of that half, Arsenal go in ahead. Two gifts from Liverpool and two clinical finishes from Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson. Extraordinary really.

Liverpool have gone in behind at half-time despite scoring the opening goal for the first time since December 2016 vs West Ham; that game was also the last time they made two errors leading directly to a goal in the opening half.

46: Jurgen Klopp is not impressed. When Reiss Nelson’s goal went in he stood with his mouth wide open inside the technical area. He’s not parked on the bench shaking his head in disbelief.

45: Two minutes added time.

ARSENAL 2-1 LIVERPOOL | NELSON

44: GOAL! What is happening tonight?! Liverpool are making schoolboy errors and gifting goals for fun!

Alisson is the culprit on this occasion with a poor, half-hearted clearance that’s collected by Alexandre Lacazette. He finds Reiss Nelson, who fires a clinical effort beyond the Liverpool goalkeeper.

40: Close! Andrew Robertson drives down the left and sends a pin-point cross over for Sadio Mane, whose header loops over the crossbar.

37: Arsenal look rejuvenated by Alexandre Lacazette’s equaliser. They look more confident and are prepared to throw bodies forward in search of a second. They’ve not created any clear-cut chances but the signs are looking better for Mikel Arteta’s side.

34: I suppose it’s a compliment for people to be so utterly and completely surprised by an error from Virgil Van Dijk. Had David Luiz done the same then nobody would bat an eyelid.

Arsenal’s equaliser came following Virgil van Dijk’s first error leading to a goal in the Premier League since March 2019 (v Fulham), while it was also the Gunners’ first shot of the game.

ARSENAL 1-1 LIVERPOOL | LACAZETTE

31: GOAL! What’s happened here?! Massive mistake from Virgil Van Dijk has gifted Arsenal a goal.

The centre-back dithers on the ball just outside his penalty area and Reiss Nelson steals it off him rather easily. Alexandre Lacazette nips in, rounds the goalkeeper and plants it between the sticks. VVD looks stunned and thought he’d been fouled but clearly he wasn’t. VAR Agrees.

30: Andrew Robertson does well to intercept a cross aimed for Reiss Nelson. Just a brief glimmer of hope for Arsenal, who have started to shift up the field a touch.

27: Just the four touches for Nicolas Pepe so far this evening. Arsenal have sat so deep throughout. A lot of energy from Liverpool.

24: Arsenal… haven’t responded to the opener and remain pegged back inside their own half. Thankfully for them, there’s a drinks break. Time to have a word, Mikel.

22: Sadio Mane has scored six goals against Arsenal in the Premier League, only against Crystal Palace (nine) does he have more in the competition.

ARSENAL 0-1 LIVERPOOL | MANE

20: GOAL! Easy, too easy for the Premier League champions. Perhaps they are simply making it look easy as Sadio Mane makes the breakthrough.

The goal stems from the left channel as Roberto Firmino slips it down the line for Andrew Robertson, who cuts it inside for an unmarked Mane to convert. Could be the first of many at this rate…

19: Arsenal really struggling now. They are being strangled by this energetic and focused Liverpool side, who don’t look to have let their foot off the gas.

David Luiz punts the ball upfield and straight out of play. That about sums it up.

16: Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is lucky to get away with kicking the ball away. Referee Paul Tierney gives him a warning and gets Alexandre Lacazette to translate for some reason. Not sure what that was about.

13: Whoosh! Emiliano Martinez – you lucky, lucky boy. The Arsenal goalkeeper is a bit casual when clearing his lines and thumps it straight at Roberto Firmino. The ball cannons off the forward and against the post. Could easily have been the opener.

10: Rob Holding ploughs through the back of Sadio Mane and Liverpool have a free-kick towards the left side of the penalty area. Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves it for Andrew Robertson but his delivery is easily gathered by Emiliano Martinez.

8: Corner to Liverpool. It was their undoing against Tottenham (sorry for mentioning it) over the weekend but Cedric Soares manages to head it away.

5: Fireworks going off outside the Emirates Stadium. Those London-based Liverpool fans doing their best… Anyway, Bukayo Saka drives down the left channel and wins the first corner of the evening for his side.

It’s a well-worked routine cut back to Kieran Tierney and played deep for Cedric Soare, whose header into the penalty area is cleared by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Love a training-ground corner me. I mean they almost never come off but incredibly fun to watch.

3: It looks like a back three for Arsenal. Cedric Soares and Bukayo Saka the right and left wing-backs. Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz in the middle. Jurgen Klopp suspected his counterpart Mikel Arteta wouldn’t change his tactics and he’s right.

Andrew Robertson flashes in a low cross aimed for Mohamed Salah but Tierney clears.

ARSENAL 0-0 LIVERPOOL

1: Another game, another Guard of Honour. The Liverpool players must be getting bored of that now… maybe not. PEEP! We’re underway at the Emirates Stadium folks.

Look… on paper this doesn’t look a pleasant prospect for Arsenal but Liverpool haven’t been at their brilliant best and quite a few of Mikel Arteta’s side have a point to prove ahead of the FA Cup semi-final. Should be interesting.

They think it’s all over…

And it is for the three 6pm fixtures. Harry Kane scored a brace to help Tottenham to a 3-1 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Manchester City squeezed past (kind of) Bournemouth 2-1. David Brooks scored in the final few minutes to make things interesting.

And finally, Chris Wood scored a 96th-minute penalty for Burnley to make it 1-1 against Wolves.

Departures?

Stuttgart are expected to make approaches for several Arsenal players in the upcoming transfer window, reports claim.

It’s thought the club are interested in recruiting Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Stuttgart secured promotion from Germany’s second-tier to the Bundesliga and are on the look-out for defensive additions.

Arsenal’s former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat was appointed Stuttgart’s sporting director in April 2019.

Apparently a one-year loan deal is close to being agreed for Mavropanos. Read the full article here.

Latest scores

Manchester City haven’t added to their 2-0 first-half scoreline against Bournemouth. That is a surprise.

Tottenham are leading Newcastle 2-1 at St James’ Park. Matt Ritchie scored to level things up but Harry Kane responded soon after. Again, a surprise.

Raul Jimenez has just scored a thing of beauty to give Wolves a one-goal lead against Burnley at Turf Moor. No surprise.

Twitter reaction

Jordan: Rob Holding back which is a bonus & Reiss Nelson getting a start. Nice, but Bukayo Saka at LWB?! Does this mean Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be kept fresh aiming to win on Saturday to get European football through the FA Cup?

Josh: May as well rest players. We’re going to get hammered regardless of the line-up – Mikel Arteta giving fans the excuse that we didn’t play full strength, genius!

Adam: Just me who’s looking forward to Mohamed Salah vs David Luiz?!

I suspect it’ll be a bloodbath, Adam. Still, stranger things have happened.

Did you know…

Liverpool have never beaten Arsenal at the Emirates when Mesut Ozil has started. 3 Wins, 3 Draws and 0 Losses.

Take that with a pinch of salt, I saw it on Twitter and didn’t do my due diligence.

A bundle. There are three 6pm fixtures taking place as we speak.
