Stacey Dooley talks ‘frightening’ time in backstage admission 'Can kick off at any moment'

BBC documentary star Stacey Dooley, 33, has covered a variety of extreme issues from ISIS to investigating sex offenders during her lengthy career, however while she may seem brave on camera when it comes to confrontation, the presenter admitted she spends most of her time “panicking” on set.

Speaking on the Pound for Pound boxing podcast alongside Jake Wood and Spencer Oliver, Stacey was asked if she feels vulnerable at any point during filming.

She revealed: “Yeah and that’s the funny thing, even though they are the films I’m most proud of, it sort of encourages discussion and engagement.

“I don’t enjoy it when I’m there, you know, I’m so frightened.

“I’m actually such a wimp, everyone always assumes, ‘Ah you’re really brave’ and ‘You’re courageous’ but I’m not, I spend the whole time panicking.

“You have to, even the way that you navigate your way through, you can’t just walk about because there is so many explosive IED.

“You have to walk one metre this way and one metre right, they’ll sort of dictate what path you take.

“But then in other situations, if you’re interviewing someone who is a survivor of sexual violence for example, that has to be a lot more comfortable .

“The fewer people the better, just to make sure they feel safe.”

Stacey’s boyfriend Kevin Clifton recently admitted he worries about her when she’s away covering a potentially dangerous topic.

“I don’t know how she does it,” he admitted on Debbie McGee’s Spill The Tea podcast.

He added: “She’s very brave. She would say she’s not brave – she says she’s a bit of a wimp and she does get very scared in these places, but I think she’s very brave.

“I don’t do what she does, it just sounded like such a dangerous position to be in.

“All I can say to her is just, ‘Please be careful. Don’t go too far to get some conversation you want or some shot or something. It’s not worth it. Just come back to me in one piece’.”
