The Old Guard: Charlize Theron character Andromache has a tragic real life backstory

The Old Guard dropped on Netflix this week and saw a collection of immortal soldiers fighting for their lives. At the helm of this collection of warriors was Andy (played by Charlize Theron) – which is short for Andromache.

Fans of the comic books may know the fictional backstory of Andromache, however they – and newcomers to the franchise – may not know the truth behind her existence.

While Andromache of Scythia never existed, she has an elaborate and complex backstory full of love, loss, and tragedy.

The character herself is probably based upon an Amazon warrior with the same name, however.

There is, however, historical myth referring to a woman named Andromache.

As legend goes, Andromache was a woman from Greek mythology.

Detailing more of her character’s pathos, she added: “But she’s become tired and frustrated with her immortality.

“And when we meet her she is reluctant to continue fighting as it doesn’t seem to have made a difference after all this time.”

The Old Guard writer Greg Rucka spoke of Andy as well, saying: “Andy’s tired. She’s done everything, seen everything, and experienced everything more times than she can count.

“There’s not a language that she can’t speak and not a weapon she can’t use.
