Ready Player One sequel: Ready Player Two arrives this year from Ernest Cline

Ready Player One brought unprecedented amounts of joy to readers in 2011 when it was first released. While the concept of virtual reality had certainly been around since the days of William Gibson’s Neuromancer, Ernest Cline crafted a nuanced childlike wonderland within the Oasis – despite it being set during a bleak and barren futuristic world.

Fans of the franchise were ecstatic, then, when the movie rights to the story were picked up by Warner Bros.

Things were even more exciting further down the line when it was announced legendary Hollywood director Steven Spielberg would be taking the helm of the film.

Shortly after the release of the first book Cline announced he was working on a new book – and today the sequel’s title has been announced: Ready Player Two.

Presumably continuing the story of Wade Watts and his journey through James Halliday’s Oasis, readers can expect to enjoy more virtual reality hijinks in the Oasis.

This information is, of course, extremely vague, but at least confirms fans will see their favourite characters once again.

Wade Watts will no doubt make a comeback, but it will be interesting to see if he is still with his new girlfriend, Art3mis.

On the sequel, Cline added in 2018: “The fun of the sequel for me would be exploring other facets of pop culture that I love and not just using the same ones over again.

“That’s one of the reasons that I’m drawn to write more stories in this world.”

Fans of the franchise will of course also want to know about any potential sequel to the film.

Spielberg hasn’t been working lots in the past decade, so when it was announced he would take on Ready Player One it was quite a shock.

Thankfully, it was extremely well received, leaving fans satisfied by the adaptation.

As for if there’ll be more in the pipeline, Art3mis star Olivia Cooke told Digital Spy back in 2018 she had “signed up for a sequel”.

She said: “I’ve signed my life away, so I’m contracted to sequels but I don’t know [if they’re happening]. I haven’t heard anything. We’ll see.”

Perhaps the most interesting thing about that is the fact Cooke said “sequels”.

In an endless virtual world, it the world of Ready Player One could certainly never truly come to an end.

But does this mean fans will be getting more in the years to come?
