Frankie Dettori’s mount English King is aiming to become the first horse since 1999 to win the Derby from stall one.
English King’s trainer Ed Walker said: “I have to say the draw doesn’t worry me. Frankie’s not worried and the fact Ryan Moore didn’t choose his ride until after the draw and he went for Mogul, who is next to us in two, suggests to me neither Frankie nor Ryan feel it is impossible to win from down there.
“Frankie has seen and done it all before. A few weeks ago I was expecting a smaller field, so it may be more tactical than normal, but then it’s always tactical in the Derby.
“We’ve got the right man on board to navigate the waters.”
Express Sport‘s tipster The Scout is backing Kameko for glory – and the Andrew Balding-trained three-year-old is the bookies’ favourite.
The going has been declared as good after minimal rain on Friday.
Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said: “I’ve walked the course this morning and I’m going to leave the going unaltered as good. It was quite a dry but breezy day here yesterday and I think things certainly dried out a bit.
“There was barely half a millimetre of rain in the evening and it’s overcast this morning. I wouldn’t call it a damp morning but it’s quite dull and overcast. It’s not cold and we’re still around 15 or 16 degrees. It could be a humidy sort of day up to 21 degrees but I think we’re going to stay dry with the odd sunny spell.
“It’s like a dry day but not a particularly drying day.”
