James Maddison: Why is Leicester star not playing vs Chelsea in FA Cup?

James Maddison was left out of Leicester’s squad for their FA Cup quarter-final with Chelsea due to injury. Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers said: “I think with the games all coming close together, it’s just to keep some freshness in the team.

“James Maddison is obviously injured. Offensively we just tried to freshen it up to bring some energy into the team.

“They [Chelsea] have outstanding players and got a very good result in the week and they will look to take that form into the game today. Hopefully we can make the next step today and get the win.”

The extent of Maddison’s injury has not been confirmed but the BBC say the Leicester star has picked up a knock.

The 23-year-old has been in fine form this season, scoring nine goals and providing three assists.

His performances have seen him linked with a move away from Leicester this summer, with Manchester United reported to be one of the interested parties.

But Rodgers believes the King Power Stadium is the best place for Maddison to continue his development.

The Northern Irishman is also hopeful the player will sign a new contract, with his current deal due to expire in 2023.

Speaking last week, Rodgers said: “James is a very important player for us.
