Harry Smith dead: Westminster correspondent dies suddenly

ITN’s former Westminster correspondent Harry Smith has died. The reporter’s family announced the tragic news of his death on Twitter today. 

They said in a statement on Twitter: “From Harry’s family: Very sadly Harry died suddenly early on Friday morning.

It’s so hard to believe his energy and sense of fun are gone. Many of you will have known him for his strong opinions and humour on here.

“He’ll be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues.”

Harry is believed to have been 69-years-old. 

The journalist worked as a Westminster Correspondent for ITN and STV and was an occasional contributor to Channel 4 and Aljazeera.

Tributes have flooded in for the late presenter on social media.

BBC’s Chris Mason tweeted: “What desperately sad news.

“It was always a joy to see Harry around Westminster; a face and voice on the television throughout my life. My condolences.”

Alastair Campbell wrote: “So sorry to hear this. He was a lovely man and a proper journalist.”

Nicole Sturgeon shared a picture of the late presenter on her Twitter page, writing: “This is terribly sad news.

“Harry was a stalwart of Scottish and UK political reporting, and always a gentleman.

“My thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and former colleagues.”
