India vs Pakistan: India shoots down ‘armed’ Pakistani drone over Kashmir

India and Pakistan have already fought two wars since independence that were partially or completely over the sovereignty of the territory. The drone, which was reportedly carrying weaponry, was shot down by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) in Kathua district near the Pansar border outpost.

In a statement the BSF said: “Alert troops of BSF shot down a Pakistani Hexa copter drone carrying 01 M4 carbine machine (US Made), 02 filled magazines (60 Rds), 07 Chinese grenades.”

According to the Press Trust of India the drone was spotted by an Indian patrol at 12.40am BST.

It was allegedly then shot down 250 meters inside the Indian side of the border.

The BSF has launched an investigation to find out who the arms being carried by the drone were intended for.

Along with their statement the BSF released several photos of what it claimed were parts of the drone.

India has been fighting insurgents in Kashmir who want to either join Pakistan or become an independent state since 1989.

It has long alleged these groups have been receiving covert assistance, including arms, from the Pakistani state.

According to Indian police more than 47,000 people have been killed in the insurgency since 1989 though some activist groups insist the real figure is around 100,000.

In February and March 2019 there were violent clashes between the Indian and Pakistani militaries.

India conducted airstrikes into Pakistani territory targeting the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group following a suicide bombing which killed 40 Indian paramilitary troops.

In response Pakistani warplanes carried out retaliatory strikes on Indian territory leading to air-to-air combat.

During the fighting one Indian jet was shot down and its pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, seized by Pakistani forces.

Mr Varthaman, who had been flying a MiG-21 Biston, was later released on March 1.

The two sides also exchanged artillery strikes during this period leading to civilian deaths on both sides.

Indian forces also claimed they shot down two Pakistani warplanes but this was denied by Islamabad and no independent evidence has been provided.

India and Pakistan have fought each other four times since becoming independent from Britain with conflict in 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999.

Chinese casualty figures have not been confirmed by Beijing but a US intelligence report suggested 35 of the country’s troops may have died.

As firearms are banned near the border the fighting took place with iron rods, bricks and clubs.

Several of those killed reportedly drowned after falling or being pushed off the high ground and into a river.
