Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 release facing surprise new rival?

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is an ambitious new project that will be released on the Nintendo Switch as a first-party exclusive. And while there is plenty to look forward to, no fresh news has been shared by the development team regarding the direction of the new game. From the brief trailer shared during E3, it appears that Link’s next adventure will be darker than what was seen in BOTW. But even if there are changes made, it seems very likely that Nintendo will have another hit on their hands when it hits shelves.

The only problem is that fans could be waiting much longer than expected for that day to arrive.

While some rumours had suggested a launch during the current year, recent reports have surfaced suggesting that the new Zelda game has been delayed.

And if that’s the case, Nintendo Switch gamers might be waiting until 2021 to get their hands on it.

So what could help fill the space left by such a big game from Nintendo?

Interestingly enough, footage from Ubisoft’s Gods and Monsters surfaced this week, showcasing some interesting gameplay.

As reported by Eurogamer, the new content was made available to play on Google Stadia by accident.

And when that footage was shared online, it didn’t take long for comparisons to be made with Zelda Breath of the Wild.

No set release date has been shared regarding when Gods & Monsters will be available to buy, but the footage certainly showcased something that might interest BOTW fans.

Some of the combat and climbing mechanics look inspired but there are also elements of Assassin’s Creed in the mix too.

But however much this might have looked akin to Zelda Breath of the Wild, Ubisoft has confirmed that Gods & Monsters has changed since this demo was produced.

The content on display is now a year-old and the project has now reportedly changed a lot, with even the official name – Gods & Monsters – being replaced.

“Our vision for the game formerly known as Gods and Monsters has evolved in surprising ways, which is common when developing exciting new worlds,” Ubisoft Quebec exec Marc-Alexis Cote revealed in a statement issued to Eurogamer.

“This footage is from our E3 2019 demo, which was shown to select press last June and is now over one year old. Much has changed since then in terms of features, tone, art and character design, and even the name of the game. We are hard at work and very excited to finally show players what we have created at the end of summer.”

The leak was also confirmed by Stadia in a statement made to Kotaku, which reads:

“Regretfully, on Thursday morning, we mistakenly made an E3 2019 demo version of Gods & Monsters from Ubisoft available on the Stadia store that was not intended for the public to play.”

“A few hundred gamers were able to play it for less than 30 minutes. We sincerely apologise to our partners at Ubisoft for this mistake.”

So while there have been plenty of delays this year, there are still some exciting reveals being planned for the coming months, which may well include Zelda Breath of the Wild 2.
