VW claims there is ‘no legal basis’ for UK claims despite law firms demanding compensation

Volkswagen claims recent developments in Germany have not changed the legal position of the group on an international level. VW have confirmed that because each jurisdiction is “unique” there is no change to legal action in the UK.

A UK case date is not set before March 2022 meaning motorists could be forced to wait for news of any compensation they may receive.

But despite this, the car firm has claimed there is no basis for a legal claim and they will defend itself robust against any legal action.

VW’s tough stance suggests compensation payments will not be given lightly with any decision set to be made by the courts to settle the matter.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, a VW spokesperson said: “The verdict of the German Federal Court of Justice does not change Volkswagen Group’s legal position, neither in Germany nor on an international level.

“The Volkswagen Group has defended itself robustly against all claims brought against it in the UK, and will continue to do so.

“The fact is that the vehicles are and were safe, roadworthy and legal to drive despite the NOx issue.”

Despite VW’s tough stance on any UK legal action, motorists who say they have been affected by the scandal won the first round of a case back in April.

In the case, Judge Justice Wakeman ruled the devices installed on cars was the controversial defeat device software.

Legal firm Slater and Gordon who represented the claimants called for VW to settle claims and put the “shameful episode” behind it.

However VW have previously claimed the decision in the first round changed nothing adding the firm was not liable to any claimants.
