Hillary Clinton’s astonishment at White House response ‒ ‘It was like war was declared!'

Hillary was First Lady of the United States when her husband Bill Clinton was President between 1993 and 2001.

She later served as a New York Senator, as Secretary of State and then ran as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 2016.

The presidential campaign was bitterly fought, with the Republican candidate Trump branding her “Crooked Hillary”, while she labelled his supporters “a basket of deplorables”.

In the end, she lost the election, but has not stopped criticising the President.

Her daughter Chelsea has also spoken out against what she claimed is the “collision of cruelty and incompetence” of the Trump administration.

However, when the pair of them appeared on the BBC’s The Graham Norton Show in November, instead of talking about the current President, they reflected on their own time in the White House.

Hillary recalled a bizarre incident when Chelsea and her friends ordered pizza to the White House, and it was “like war had been declared”.

Graham Norton had asked Chelsea whether she was ever allowed treats or junk food, and whether her friends could come over.

Chelsea said: “It was pretty strict during the week and then more relaxed on weekends.”

Hillary added: “The place was filled with her friends.

“And it’s true that the White House does like to prepare all the food and the kids were not always enthusiastic about the food that they were being served, so they were always trying to call for pizzas.

“And you can’t order a pizza to the White House, I’ll just tell you that.

Imitating the hypothetical manager, he said: “Oh you want a pizza to the White House do you? Yes, thank you very much, we’re very busy.”

He mimed hanging up the phone looking annoyed.

Hillary laughed but insisted that someone had in fact taken it seriously.

Graham also touched on the fact that Hillary actually campaigned about food during the 1992 presidential election.

George H W Bush “banished” broccoli from the White House during his four years in office, and Hillary decided to push to “get broccoli back in the White House again”.

Hillary said: “I happen to like broccoli and, you know, there’s a lot of things that you can argue about, but I thought arguing about broccoli was as good as any.”

Chelsea also revealed during the interview that she gave up red meat when she was 11 and went full vegetarian when she was 13.

However, it is unclear whether her parents ever followed suit.
