Coronavirus breakthrough: Second country close to beating coronavirus after New Zealand

COVID-19 has seen terrible losses of life world-wide, with global confirmed cases at 7,193,478 and total deaths at 408,615. The country would follow New Zealand in eradicating all active cases of the virus within its borders.

Dr Francisco Duran, National Director of Epidemiology at the Public Health Ministry, reported that the country has only nine active cases of COVID-19.

Dr Duran also reported that the positive patients are all Cubans.

Of those infected, six are contacts of positive or suspects cases.

The others origins of infections are one with a source of infection abroad, and two still being investigated.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel said this weekend that the country will soon begin “recovery” from the epidemic.

He said: “We could be shortly closing in on the tail end of the pandemic and entering the phase of recovery from COVID.”

Reina Paula, a saleswoman at Havana’s La Epoca supermarket, told Reuters that the same day that a worker tested positive for the coronavirus, local authorities sent the rest of the staff in multiple state vehicles to isolation facilities for testing.

Healthcare providers traced their relatives and sent them into quarantine, while state news outlets publicly appealed to anyone who had had close contact with them to come forward to prevent the virus from spreading.

She said to Reuters: “They followed the clinical steps like a Swiss clock.”

Cuba has seen a total of 2,200 infected with COVID-19, the 93rd highest in the world.

Of that number, only 83 have tragically lost their life from the virus.

Six of those infected are asymptomatic, for a total of 1,160 asymptomatic patients in the country.

On Sunday, 2,200 diagnostic tests were studied to detect the presence of the coronavirus, and so far 120,536 samples have been accumulated, which are carried out on inpatients as suspects and contacts of patients suffering from the disease.

Monday also marks the ninth day straight where Cuba has reported no new deaths from coronavirus.

Similar to many other countries, Cuba entered lockdown early onto the pandemic on March 23.

Where Cuba’s approach differs from other countries is their obligatory face mask orders, and strict quarantine orders.

In addition, the country has been strong on its legal implications for breaking measures, with heavy fines and prison sentences being ordered and trials for these crimes being broadcast on state media outlets.

The country’s success comes after New Zealand has reported zero active cases of coronavirus on Sunday.

The country has lifted all restrictions and measures related to COVID-19, but has kept its borders closed for the foreseeable future.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said: “While we’re in a safer, stronger position, there’s still no easy path back to pre-Covid life, but the determination and focus we have had on our health response will now be vested in our economic rebuild.

“While the job is not done, there is no denying this is a milestone.

“So can I finish with a very simple, ‘Thank you, New Zealand’.”
