Fire Dr. Oz Trends After His Shocking Comments About Children Returning To School Even Though Some Would Die — Issues Apology

Fire Dr. Oz is trending on social media after he made shocking comments about children returning to school, even though some would die. The remarks were made on Sean Hannity’s news show and now there is outrage across the country with many demanding he is removed. Seeing the backlash against the remarks, Dr. Oz issued a public apology and said he misspoke. Dr. Oz was responding to the Coronavirus pandemic and the decision across the nation to shut down cities due to many stay at home and lockdown orders having been issued.

The Coronavirus death toll in the United States has skyrocketed to 34, 522. There have been over 143,000 Coronavirus related deaths worldwide and more than 600,000 cases in the United States. Dr. Oz stated the following on Fox News regarding opening up public schools.

“Schools are a very appetizing opportunity. I just saw a nice piece in The Lancet arguing the opening of schools may only cost us 2 to 3%, in terms of total mortality. Any, you know, any life is a life lost, but … that might be a tradeoff some folks would consider.”

The backlash was swift and severe. It didn’t take long before Dr. Oz turned to his social media platform to release an apology.

The first part of Dr. Oz’s statement that people are taking issue with is that he referred to children going back to public school as “appetizing.” Many people do not agree that putting children at risk of dying is appetizing in any sense of the word. People are also taking issue with the fact that Dr. Oz dropped statistics for how many children would die. Though, it is unclear if he means how many children in the public school system could die or how many people in the entire nation could die if children went to school, became infected, and brought the deadly virus home to their families.

If he was referring to children, 2 percent would be equivalent to over one million public school children that could die from the virus.

At this point, it’s unclear exactly who he believes the 2 to 3 percent of fatalities would be.

“I’ve realized my comments on risks around opening schools have confused and upset people, which was never my intention. I misspoke.”
