Chris Matthews Lands In Huge Trouble For Comparing Bernie Sanders’s Nevada Victory To Nazi Invasion — Will The Apology Fix Things?

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews sure knows how to grab headlines for all the wrong reasons. After it was confirmed that Sen. Bernie Sanders had a decisive win in the Nevada caucuses, Matthews shocked viewers by comparing the victory to the horrific Nazi invasion of France in 1940.

The veteran TV host, who heads Hardball, said this: “I was reading last night about the fall of France in the summer of 1940. And the general, Reynaud, calls up Churchill and says, ‘It’s over.’ And Churchill says, ‘How can that be? You’ve got the greatest army in Europe. How can it be over?’ He said, ‘It’s over.’”

Matthews is being bashed by thousands of people who are asking for him to step down. Sanders took the state with 46.8 percent of the vote, former Vice President Joe Biden came second with 20.2 percent, and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg had 14.3 percent.

Sanders delivered a fiery speech after his huge win, where he laid out a plan for the American people.

He said: “The American people are sick and tired of a government, which is based on greed, corruption, and lies. They want an administration which is based on the principles of justice. Economic justice, social justice, racial justice, and environmental justice. Now Trump and his friends think they are going to win this election. They think they’re going to win this election by dividing our people up based on the color of their skin or where they were born or their religion or their sexual orientation. We are going to win because we are doing exactly the opposite. We’re bringing our people together. We are bringing our people together, black and white and Latino, Native American, Asian, gay and straight.”

He added: “And my promise to you is that I will never nominate anybody to the Supreme Court or the federal bench who is not 100% pro Roe v. Wade. We will codify Roe v. Wade, put it into law. And we will significantly expand funding for Planned Parenthood. As a United States Senator, I do understand the power of the corporate elite and the one percent.”

He concluded by: “Together, we are going to end the demonization of the undocumented in this country. On our first day in office through executive order, we rescind all of Trump’s racist immigration executive orders. On our first day in office through executive order, we restore the legal status of the 1.8 million young people and their parents eligible for DACA. On our first day in office, we end a border policy, which today allows federal agents to grab babies from the arms of their mothers. And throw children into cages. That is not what America is about.”

The media personality has apologized on Monday and explained: ““As I watched the one-sided results of Saturday’s Democratic caucus in Nevada, I reached for a historical analogy and used a bad one. I was wrong to refer to an event from… the first days of World War II. Senator Sanders, I’m sorry for comparing anything from that tragic error in which so many suffered, especially the Jewish people, to an electoral result in which you were the well-deserved winner. This is going to be a hard-fought heated campaign of ideas. In the days and weeks and months ahead, I will strive to do a better job myself of elevating the political discussion.”
