Android is getting this awesome PS4 feature, but don't hold your breath for it

The outlet said it found evidence to suggest Google is working on an Incremental File System (IFS) for the Linux kernel Android is based on which would enable users to launch apps before they’ve finished downloading. In essence, that means it would be possible to launch Android game that’s 5GB in size when only 1GB has downloaded, for example.

According to documentation Google submitted, the purpose of the feature is “to allow running big Android apps before their binaries and resources are fully downloaded to an Android device”.

The American tech giant added IFS is designed to “frictionlessly wait for [temporarily] missing data”. That means, in theory at least, the user shouldn’t notice when extra data is being downloaded in the background if they’ve already launched the app in question.
