Death in Paradise season 9: Why could DI Neville Parker last longer than his predecessors?

Death in Paradise returned to our screens last month for its ninth season. The BBC drama recently wished farewell to DI Jack Mooney (played by Ardal O’Hanlon) as he said goodbye to the island in favour of travelling with new girlfriend Anna Houghton (Nina Wadia). This led to the introduction of new detective Neville Parker (Ralf Little) to take over the position. He arrived in last week’s (Thursday, February 6) episode where he hit the ground running and got to working on yet another murder case straight away.

The official synopsis for the season’s fifth episode read: “After the departure of DI Jack Mooney, a new inspector arrives on the island and it falls to him to investigate an apparent suicide.

“Neurotic and plagued by allergies and other ailments, DI Neville Parker sets to work.”

DI Parker was at the reigns on the investigation but was able to solve the case with help from his new team.

Why could DI Neville Parker last longer on Death in Paradise than his predecessors?

Actors Ben Miller who played DI Richard Poole, Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman, and O’Hanlon as DI Jack Mooney all left Death in Paradise after just a few seasons each for various reasons.

Whether it was because they didn’t want to spend so much time away from their loved ones or the relentless heat while filming on the island, each one of Little’s predecessors had their reasons for quitting the series.

However, he believes he could be a great casting choice due to his unique personal position.

In a previous Express.co.uk poll, when asked who was their favourite detective on Death in Paradise, Marshall came out on top with more than 2,200 votes.

In second place was original detective played by Miller who got 1,170 of the votes.

This put O’Hanlon in last place with just 508 naming him as the best detective.

But with the introduction of Little, could he soon be in the running for the title of favourite detective on Death in Paradise?
