Friends One-Hour Reunion Special Is In The Works, And The Cast Could Pocket At Least $2 Million Each

Rumors have been swirling for months that the six stars of Friends – Jennifer Aniston (Rachel), Courteney Cox (Monica), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Matt LeBlanc (Joey), Matthew Perry (Chandler), and David Schwimmer (Ross) – could be coming together soon for a some kind of reunion or reboot, and now it looks like fans are one step closer to that becoming a reality.

According to multiple outlets, the cast of Friends is in talks to take part in a one-hour non-scripted reunion special that will air on the new WarnerMedia streaming service, HBO Max. This is the same platform that all ten seasons of Friends will move to in May after it left Netflix on the last day of 2019.

According to Deadline, the six actors could be offered anywhere between $3 million and $4 million each to participate in the special, but an insider told The Wall Street Journal that it will most likely be closer to $2.5 million.

News of the reunion broke on the same day that Perry joined Instagram. He was the last of the six stars to create an account on the social media platform, and that happened after Perry tweeted, “Big news coming.” Of course, that fueled speculation that a Friends reunion was officially in the works.

An insider dished to People magazine in November that the six stars of Friends have kept up their friendships in real life, even though the series ended in 2004. The source added that the group was in talks for a possible reunion, but it depended on “how things shake out.”

“It has to be the right treatment and the right timing,” explained the insider.

Co-creator Marta Kauffman told reporters last month at the Producers Guild Awards that a reboot of the series was off the table, but a non-scripted reunion was a strong possibility.

“If it was the right thing, if it were the six of them together reflecting, talking about their experiences and the episodes, then I’m totally behind it,” said Kauffman. “Nothing scripted; we will not do anything scripted.”

HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly said last month that there’s interest in a Friends reunion “all the way around.” But, they still hadn’t been able to get interest “all aligned to push the button on it.” He added at the time that “it’s still a maybe.”
