EU warned 'powerful' eurosceptic members to join forces and abandon 'catastrophic' bloc

Marine Le Pen warned the European Union there is a potential to trigger further departures from the bloc unless Brussels gives in to demands for more democratic consultation with the public. Ms Le Pen insisted the eurosceptic movement is now “very powerful” and urged EU member states to join forces to “abandon” the failing union for a new form of independent “cooperation.” Speaking to Euronews France, the Rassemblement Nationale leader said: “We are very powerful today and as a consequence, we are sure we can radically change this European organisation.

“We want to abandon the European Union which is considered and felt like a prison where the economic and commercial results have been catastrophic.

“And we want to build together with other European nations a true organisation based on freely-consented cooperation and not on the submission to ineffective dogmas.”

Ms Le Pen continued: “There are two solutions.

“Either the European Union understands that there is a huge problem and stops sinking into the wall, listens to the people and participates in the creation of this European alliance of nations that we want to build or it continues with its blinders and other countries will leave the European Union.”

Some French nationals joined Brexiteers in Parliament Square last week to welcome Britain’s newfound independence from the European Union on January 31.

One man, 30-year-old GP Mathieu, was seen holding a sign calling for Frexit – or France’s exit – as he told Express.co.uk: “It is possible to leave the EU.

“I want to send this message to the French people.”

France is among EU member states where euroscepticism has been on the rise over the past few years, with Ms Le Pen being one of the leading critics of the bloc during and after her tenure as an MEP.
