Match preview

CJ Stander has told Ireland debutant Caelan Doris to enjoy his international bow against Scotland.

Ex-Ireland Under-20 captain Doris has been handed the number eight jersey for his side’s Six Nations opener, with Stander moving to blindside flanker.

“I think he’s a great ball player, he’s got a great workrate,” said Stander of the 21-year-old Leinster back-rower.

“He’s still young so there’s a lot more to come from him, I would say.”

He added: “I actually met his dad about seven months ago. He told me that his son’s coming through and I was joking with him – he’s going to take my spot!”

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has challenged his side ahead of the start of the Six Nations.

“We have got to be tough to beat,” said Townsend. “We have to aim to play to our potential right through the tournament and we have to be consistent. Those are the things we need to improve the most from last season.

“It involves our defence and our decision making, staying in the fight longer in away games, being consistent.

“It’s about taking chances when they come. We know they might not come as much against a quality team like Ireland, but the last time we were here we had two or three and if we get the same on Saturday we have to make sure we take them.”
