Jamaica earthquake: Major 7.7 quake strikes between Jamaica and Cuba – Tsunami warning

The quake hit a depth of 10km between the two countries and as of yet, there have been no reports of damage. According to reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 2.36pm local time (9.37pm GMT).

Although the quake struck offshore a tsunami warning has now been issued according to BNO newsroom. 

Due to the strength of the earthquake, residents in the Jamaican capital of Kingston reported “tremors”. 

One person wrote on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre: “The whole house was shaking.” 

Due to the strength of the earthquake, the United States Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs issued an alert to citizens. 

The alert stated: “U.S. citizens in the affected area – check in on social media and contact loved ones to let them know you are safe.”

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), there are an estimated 20 million inhabitants who could be at risk of the earthquake. 

There have also been reports from the National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (NWS PTWC) there is the risk of a tsunami threat to coastal Belize, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. 

Moreover, the Cayman Islands Management Agency has reportedly told residents in low-lying areas to evacuate.
