Galaxy Watch update: Is Samsung about to release ANOTHER new wearable?

Samsung is working on the next-generation of its Galaxy Watch wearable series. That’s according to Dutch outlet Galaxy Club that has a solid track record with Samsung leaks past. The publication speculated the device could be a direct successor to the original Galaxy Watch that debuted alongside the Galaxy Note 9 back in August of 2018, although this is unconfirmed.

Galaxy Club said it had received information to suggest the South Korean tech giant’s newest wearable has the model code SM-R840. While that may not mean much to you, it was noted the hardware will sport a 330mAh battery which, if true, would be slightly smaller than the 340mAh cell housed inside the Galaxy Watch Active 2.

Samsung’s newest smartwatch apparently won’t debut alongside the firm’s Galaxy S20 series that’s all but confirmed to be unwrapped on February 11 at the firm’s scheduled Unpacked event in San Francisco. That’s not completely surprising as Samsung’s showcase next month is already shaping up to be a packed one. In addition to showing off a whopping five Galaxy S20 models, the Seoul tech giant is also tipped to unveil its next foldable phone rumoured to be called the Galaxy Z Flip.

It’s also possible Samsung could discuss its Galaxy Home smart speaker range during proceedings, too. So yes, we’re expecting a very busy Unpacked event next month.

Instead it was noted the South Korean firm could wait until later in the year to unveil the purported wearable – perhaps an announcement alongside the presumably titled Galaxy Note 20 is on the cards?

Unfortunately, Galaxy Club didn’t discuss any pricing details for Samsung’s next smartwatch.

Samsung has focused heavily on smartwatches in the last year and a half, presumably in a bid to compete with arch rival Apple. The original Galaxy Watch was unveiled in August 2018, the Galaxy Watch Active followed in February 2019 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2 launched six months after that.

Interestingly, Samsung still sells each of those three Galaxy Watch models on its website, suggesting the South Korean firm believes they appeal to different customers. The original Galaxy Watch boasts a very different design to the Galaxy Watch Active and Active 2 thanks to its thicker build and rotating bezel.

Each Galaxy Watch model has focused heavily on health and fitness features in addition to delivering expected smartwatch functionality such as notifications.

Samsung’s wearables are usually extremely refined pieces of kit. Unlike a number of other Android-focused wearables, the Galaxy Watch series doesn’t run on Google’s Wear OS platform.

Instead, the tech giant opts to leverage its own Tizen operating system that’s certainly designed to work best with Samsung smartphones.
