Melania Trump shock: FLOTUS' Slovenian friends share intimate details about her childhood

Some of the First Lady’s childhood friends have now shed some light on what the FLOTUS’ life was like before she met her husband Trump. The FLOTUS was born Melania Knavs in Novo Mesto, and grew up in Sevnica which was in the Yugoslav republic of Slovenia.

BBC News interviewed some of her friends from her hometown who shared their views of her growing up.

One of her old friends who is an artist called Jerca Santej said Melania always knew what she wanted to do with her life.

She said: “She was around 16, when she started thinking (about) what she she will do when she grows up.

“She had a straight idea what she would be, and that’s unbelievable for such a young girl, so I knew that she would make something special.”

Melania’s former school teacher, Nena Bedek, described her as very humble.

Although the First Lady never said that she wanted to be a fashion model, she always knew she wanted to be a part of the fashion industry.

The former school teacher said Melania’s mother would also bring home fashion magazines which the young First Lady would look at.

Ms Bedek said: “I always knew our town was too small for her.

Natasha Pinza, a one-time Miss Slovenia winner, said she encountered Melania at a Miss Universe contest in July 2006 in Los Angeles.

Ms Pinza was also shocked as the First Lady spoke to her in her native Slovenian.

The sweet gesture from Melania thrilled the beauty contestant.

Melanie began modelling at five-years-old and started doing commercial work when she was 16.

She posed for the Slovenian fashion photographer Stane Jerko.

She also worked as a model in Milan and Paris and moved to New York in 1996.

Melania is the second first lady to be born outside the US.

However, she is the first FLOTUS whose native language is not English.

Louisa Adams was the first FLOTUS to be born outside the US.
