Jay Aston: 'She became engrossed' Cheryl Baker on how cancer inspired Brexit MP run

When Jay Aston, 58, was bedridden for months with mouth cancer, she became fascinated with parliamentary news and decided to run as a Brexit MP. Bandmate Cheryl Baker, 65, gives us her thoughts on the Bucks Fizz star’s shock political move and an update on her cancer battle.

Cheryl explained that she was shocked to hear that Jay had decided to run as a Brexit Party MP.

She exclusively told Express.co.uk: “When she had cancer she was bedridden for so long she used to watch Parliament on the telly and she became completely embroiled in it, she became engrossed.

“And that’s when she said ‘I want to go into politics’. It’s all about the music for me, I’m jazz hands all the way.

“All I could say to her is good luck! Because me and politics will never get on.”

She added: “All that she has been through – it is just so much.

“She even had to have teeth removed at the back. She’s just dealt with it, I am so very proud of her.”

Jay ran as a member of Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party in the Kensington constituency in a bid to win a seat for the Brexit Party.

She lost to Tory Felciity Buchan who achieved 16,768 votes. Jay achieved 348 votes, placing her fifth in the final poll.
