Cabin crew secrets: Flight attendants reveal most disgusting things found in seat pockets

But beyond these frustrations, many planes aren’t very clean – particularly the seat pockets.

Seat pockets are usually filled with in-flight magazines, a health and safety guide and information about the airline – but they’re often also filled with dirt, rubbish, grime and even unsanitary products that no one would want to discover.

They explained: “I ALWAYS recommend you never, ever, ever, EVER use or put anything in the seat pocket. They are cleared of rubbish but are never ‘cleaned’.”

A study conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) found that seat pockets are one of the filthiest spots on a plane.

The study found that the seat pocket had the second-highest level of bacteria on it after the headrest.

The CBC reported that the seat pocket was full of E. coli, suggesting that there could have been some fecal contamination.

In 2019, Naomi Campbell shared her airport routine which included a vigorous cleaning process, using gloves and Dettol wipes to clean her seat and tray table.

In the YouTube video, which went viral and amassed more than two million views, Naomi said: “Clean everything you touch, anything you could possibly touch. All this stuff – anything you can put your hands on.”

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has also shared her secrets to staying healthy when flying.

She wrote on her now defunct lifestyle blog The Tig: “I’m no germaphobe, but when I get on a plane I always use some quick hand wipes or a travel sanitizer spray to wipe it all down: that includes the little TV, the service tray, and all the buttons around your seat.

“Sure, the person next to you may give you a side eye, but at the end of the flight, you’ll be the one whistling dixie with nary a sniffle.”

She also revealed: “Always travel with a high strain probiotic, and hydrate like you’re dying of thirst – because even if you’re not, for your body – the thirst is real.

“This dynamic duo of probiotics and aqua will keep your gut health in check and honestly stave off jet lag if you’re globetrotting on your travels.”
