Prince Philip Hospitalized As A ‘Precautionary Measure’ Ahead Of Royal Christmas At Sandringham

Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, was hospitalized in London early Friday morning, according to Buckingham Palace. The Duke of Edinburgh is 98 years old, and he was staying at the Queen’s Sandringham estate when he was taken to Edward VII Hospital.

“The Duke of Edinburgh traveled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a preexisting condition,” the palace said in a statement to the BBC. “The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ doctor.”

Prince Phillip was not rushed to the hospital via ambulance. Instead, this was a planned admission, and he is expected to stay for a few days.

After retiring from public life in August 2017, Prince Philip has kept a relatively low profile and is rarely seen in public. The last time he was spotted was in May when he attended Lady Gabriella Kingston’s wedding.

The Duke of Edinburgh has also had numerous health problems in recent years, and the royal has been in and out of the hospital while also missing scheduled appearances. In 2011, Prince Philip had emergency surgery to correct a blocked artery, and in 2012 he suffered from a bladder infection.

Last year he canceled his appearance at the Maundy church service at the very last minute, and he also skipped out on Easter Sunday services.

Prince Philip has been married to Queen Elizabeth for 72 years. When the monarch was crowned Queen in 1952, he became the consort, and has been the longest-serving consort of a reigning sovereign in British history, according to Us Weekly.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are the parents of four – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward – and they also have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

When they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997, Queen Elizabeth said that Prince Philip was someone who doesn’t take easily to compliments. But, she had to let the world know that the Duke of Edinburgh has been her “strength and stay all these years.”

“I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know,” said the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth arrived at her private residence at Sandringham on Friday for the family’s annual Christmas celebration. The palace has not revealed if Prince Philip will be out of the hospital in time for the family’s holiday celebration.
