Trump backtrack? President to lean on EU for support following impeachment vote

Yesterday Mr Trump became the third President in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives. The House voted on two charges that the President abused his power and he had obstructed Congress.

The proceeding will now go to the Senate to decide whether or not he remains in office.

No exact date has been set for the Senate trial but Senate Democrats have proposed a trial plan would start on January 6.

The trial could coincide with Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to Washington at the beginning of next year.

Mr Trump has been a critic of the trade bloc with the EU and US clashing over trade.

This week, Ms von der Leyen tweeted: “Courtesy call with Donald Trump.

“Talked briefly about US-EU relations.

“I’m convinced, the close friendship and cooperation between Europe and the United States is crucial for mutual success.

“We both want a fair partnership.

Mr Lighthizer said: “We have a basic trade problem with Europe.

“We have to figure out a way to sell more in Europe.

“I think we’re going to undertake that.”

The President’s administration had missed an earlier deadline for imposing tariffs on automotive trade.

This occurred as Washington was carrying out an investigation into trade under the Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

Mr Lighthizer added: “There are a lot of barriers to trade there, and there are a lot of other problems that we have to address.

“So, dealing with Europe is something that’s very important and the president has focused on.

“We’ve put tariffs in place on a variety of products, and we’re going to continue to focus on that.

“It’s something the president cares about.

“You can’t get the global trade deficit down without getting the trade deficit down with Europe.”
