Star Wars Rise of Skywalker sequel: Is there another Star Wars? What’s next?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the final film in what is being called the “Skywalker saga.” Beginning with 1977’s Star Wars, later named Star Wars: A New Hope, fans have tracked the life of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi Wan Kenobi and now Kylo Ren and Rey. But what is next for the franchise – and are there any more Skywalker movies to come?

Is there another Star Wars sequel?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the final film in the Skywalker saga.

This means, as far as we know, there will be no more movies about Luke Skywalker or his family.

Remaining completely spoiler-free, the film ties up some loose ends for the Skywalkers, answering the big questions and leaving it unlikely for another movie to come.

However, it is unlikely this is where we leave the Skywalkers entirely.

Ewan McGregor, who was Obi Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy, is reprising his role in a currently untitled series which will follow his character in the years before Star Wars: A New Hope.

It is expected to be set eight years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, where Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, but before the Star Wars Rebels series, which takes place five years before A New Hope and 14 years after Revenge of the Sith.

The Obi Wan Kenobi series is expected to take place around a similar point in the timeline as Solo: A Star Wars Story, which saw the beginnings of Han Solo and how he first came to be the pilot of the Millennium Falcon.

The Obi Wan Kenobi series is under wraps, with little known about it thus far, though it may be the case that we meet Obi Wan trying to ensure the child Luke Skywalker, the secret child of Darth Vader who has been left with a family on Tatooine, is kept safe and away from the Dark Side.

However, according to McGregor, Obi Wan will still be trying to get over the pain of the Jedi cull in Revenge of the Sith, and the rise of the Galactic Empire.

He told Men’s Journal: “It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him…

“Well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with that, the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of [Revenge of the Sith].

“It’s quite something to get over.”

There was once a plan for the series to be a movie rather than a series.

But with the arrival of Disney+, it felt right to include this as a series to be watched exclusively on that platform.

Other than Obi Wan, who will be keeping a taste of the Skywalkers alive in his presence, there is even more to come from the Star Wars universe.

The Mandalorian, another new series set between Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is coming to Disney+ in the UK in March.

The Mandalorian, which has already premiered in the USA, will see a bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal) working in the outer reaches of the galaxy, away from the authority of the New Republic and before the emergence of the First Order.

As well as this series, there is also expected to be an currently untitled Cassian Andor series, which will follow the fighter before the events of Rogue One, which saw him and his troop wiped out as they fought to send the Death Star plans to the Rebel Alliance.

His beginnings will be chronicled in the series, and how he came to join the Rebel Alliance and it is expected to be a “spy thriller.”

In terms of Star Wars films, there have been two new trilogies discussed, though these will not include Skywalker.

The first is one written by Rian Johnson, the director of The Last Jedi, and it is expected the trilogy will focus on a different era and new characters altogether.

There is also expected to be a Star Wars film directed by MCU producer Kevin Feige, though very little is known about this at present.

Game of Thrones showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff were also said to be producing a new Star Wars trilogy, but they announced they would be stepping away from this in the end, meaning a second new trilogy currently hangs in the balance.

So, while Skywalker may be mostly finished, there is plenty more Star Wars for fans to get their teeth into.
