Joe Biden says Boris Johnson is Donald Trump’s ‘clone’ as he issues far-left warning

Venturing into the political conversation across the pond, the Democrat said a party would find itself in a downward spiral if its proposals cannot “be contained within a rational basis quickly”.  The former vice-president made the comments at a rally in San Francisco as he sought to use Labour’s dismal performance as a warning to voters not to back his more left-leaning rivals Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Speaking to supporters on Friday, Mr Biden, who remains the nation’s frontrunner in the race for the Democratic nomination, called Boris Johnson the “physical and emotional clone” of Donald Trump.

Mr Biden, 77, said: “Boris Johnson is winning in a walk.”

He went on to predict how Friday’s headlines would convey the Labour Party’s stinging defeat.

He said they would say: “Look what happens when the Labour Party moves so, so far to he left.

“It comes up with ideas that are not able to be contained within a rational basis quickly.”

According to a recent poll carried out by CNN, voters who are likely to vote Democrat in 2020 are about evenly split among the top three candidates.

In the survey of 1,203 adults in the Sunshine State 21 percent backed Mr Biden, 20 percent said they will vote for Senator Sanders and 17 percent said they support Ms Warren.

But it’s a different story when it comes to California’s older voters, with Mr Biden having the support of 37 percent of over 65s.

Mr Biden served as vice-president under Barack Obama for eight years.

Democrats in the House of Representatives on Friday took Republican President Trump to the brink of impeachment when they approved two charges against him over his efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate Mr Biden.

A badly divided House Judiciary Committee voted 23-17 along party lines to approve articles of impeachment.

Mr Trump is accused of abusing the power of his office over the Ukraine scandal and obstructing House Democrats’ attempts to investigate him for it.

The Republicans have shown no signs of wanting to remove Mr Trump from office.

Commentators have warned the impeachment effort may backfire, with Mr Trump’s base being riled up by the process.

Earlier today, the president wrote on Twitter: “The Republican Party is more united now than at any time in its history – by far!”
