Android boost: Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 revealed and expect to see it power your next phone

Android users have been given a major boost today with Qualcomm announcing its latest and greatest smartphone processor. The US technology firm unveiled its new Snapdragon 865 platform at its yearly tech summit in Hawaii and there could be plenty to be excited about this upgraded chip.

These new brains, which are around half the size of a penny, will replace the current the 855 as the firm’s flagship processor.

Full details about speeds and comparisons will be revealed tomorrow, Tuesday December 4, but we can fully expect the 865 to bring vastly improved performance along with far better battery life.

Gaming will also get a boost with the 865 able to bring PC performance to your pocket.

Qualcomm has also revealed that its new chip will bring better photography to devices with it helping to shoot 8K quality.

In fact, this chip will support two Gigapixels per second which means 8K video can be filmed at a pretty astounding 30fps.

There’s no word on a full list of devices will get this upgrade but most manufacturers use Qualcomm’s chips so expect Samsung, LG, Sony and OnePlus to announce news about this upgrade in the coming months.

One firm that has announced its plans for the latest Qualcomm upgrade is Xiaomi who revealed its Mi 10 device will be powered by the 865.

Oppo has also joined Qualcomm’s Tech Summit to announce that it will be launching a device in the first part of 2020.

One thing that is slightly surprising is that the 865 won’t have an in-built 5G modem which many had thought would be included in this update.

Instead, the chip will work alongside the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System.

Although the 865 isn’t getting this combined 5G tech, Qualcomm has announced another processor called the Snapdragon 765/765G  that will get this new feature.

The US firm says the 765/765G brings integrated 5G connectivity, advanced AI processing, and select Snapdragon Elite Gaming experiences.

Full platform details will be shared tomorrow.

“5G will open new and exciting opportunities to connect, compute, and communicate in ways we’ve yet to imagine and we are happy to be a key player driving the adoption of 5G around the world,” said Qualcomm Incorporated President, Cristiano Amon.

“Our Snapdragon 5G mobile platforms announced today will continue to show leadership in the industry and deliver on the promise of scaling 5G in 2020.”
