Crete earthquake: Holiday hotspot rocked by huge 6.0 magnitude tremor

USGS officials said the quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 struck 44 miles northwest of Chania on Crete’s northern coast. Witnesses described it as “deep” and “felt in many many parts of the country”.  

Buildings including universities and schools have been evacuated. Crete is a popular tourist destination throughout the year for Brits. In the summer, the island was hit by a 5.2 magnitude tremor and it was felt as far as Turkey and Italy.

The latest powerful quake follows a series of deadly tremors across the Balkans region yesterday.

At least 21 people were killed in Albania by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful earthquake to strike Europe’s poorest country in decades.
