According to a report from USAToday, Scarlett Johansson recently came out to address her previous comments where she stated she had the right, as an actress, to portray whomever and whatever she wanted, whether it was an animal, tree, or person.
A year ago, the 35-year-old actress canceled her role in the movie, Rub and Tug, following a backlash that a cisgender woman would play a transgender man. Moreover, in the previous year, Johansson was also slammed for getting the role in Ghost in the Shell.
During a conversation with at that time, Johansson doubled down on what she thought was her right as a performer. In the 2019 As If interview from July, Johansson shared that as an actress, one should have the right to portray whomever and whatever they wanted. It’s just part of the job.
However, when she sat down with reporters from Vanity Fair earlier this week, in an interview published today, Scarlett claims she realized she was “uneducated” regarding the sensitivity of the issue. “In hindsight, I mishandled that situation,” the actress remarked.
Paraphrasing what the Ghost In The Shell alum explained, Scarlett said her reaction to the backlash at first was not sensitive. She stated she didn’t understand fully how transpeople felt about the issue, specifically, her casting in such a movie.
Johansson claims she felt “uneducated” regarding the matter after the fact, but it was already too late. With that said, the silver lining to the whole ordeal lies in the details, specifically, what she learned in terms of how to proceed in the future.
Scarlett claims she felt “tone-deaf” regarding the issue, and later felt bad about it. Additionally, in recent months, Scarlett has come under fire for saying she would work with Woody Allen again if she was ever given the opportunity.

Speaking with the same outlet, Johansson stated she could only talk about her experiences with the filmmaker, who has been accused of molesting his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, repeatedly over the years. Scarlett added that her support of the criticized director doesn’t invalidate her support for women’s rights or issues.
