Roger Federer explains why he is ’smiling’ over Davis Cup clash with Gerard Pique

Roger Federer is proud to see his creation of the Laver Cup being seen as competition to the Laver Cup.

While the new format of the Davis Cup Finals was taking place, Federer was in North and South America on an exhibition tour with Alexander Zverev.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion faced some criticism for the timing of his exhibition tour, despite Switzerland not qualifying for the finals.

Federer has been embroiled in a war of words with Pique, who has played a key role in helping revamp the Davis Cup format.

Pique claimed Federer’s criticism of the Davis Cup is due to the fact he wants to “protect” the Laver Cup.

The annual tournament has proved a huge success since the first edition back in 2017 and currently holds a prime slot in September.

Pique is hoping the Davis Cup and ATP Cup can merge to create a “super event” held in the same month.

But Federer feels flattered that his creation of the Laver Cup is seen on the same level as the international men’s tournament.

“Davis Cup gave a lot to me and I gave a lot to Davis Cup too,” he told nzz am sonntag.

“I won’t ever tell anything bad about it, I hope he stays successful, he needs to.

“Our Laver Cup is three years old, Davis Cup is 120-years old.

“If they see us as competition, I take it with a smile.”

Rafael Nadal led Spain to victory at the Davis Cup, beating Canada in the final.

The Spaniard won all eight matches he participated in throughout the week, extending his unbeaten record at the Davis Cup to an incredible 29 ties.

“An amazing week, a lot of things we went through – the father of Roberto passed away… a lot of things happened,” Nadal said.

“I could not be happier. It has been an unforgettable moment in this amazing stadium; we can’t thank the crowd enough. Our team spirit prevails.”
