Man Utd chief Ed Woodward’s stance on January transfers confirmed

Manchester United will only sign players in January who are targets for the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have been tipped to spend big at the start of next year.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Declan Rice of West Ham and Leicester’s James Maddison are all targets for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and chief Ed Woodward.

United have also been tipped to move for Erling Haaland after scoring 27 goals in 18 games for RB Salzburg this season.

However, the Manchester Evening News say United will only sign players in January who they consider summer targets.

The Red Devils will not complete any quick-fix deals to boost their season.

That likely rules out a move for Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic, who has been tipped to head to Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old was expected to join United in the summer, however, a deal didn’t materialise.

United are instead trying to sign young and hungry players as Solskjaer hopes to bring silverware to Old Trafford.

Woodward has been vocal on United’s plans, with the Red Devils chief promising more big-money signings like Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

“Our ultimate goal is to win trophies, playing fast, fluid, attacking football – with a team that fuses graduates from our Academy along with world-class acquisitions,” he said.

“We know this will not be achieved overnight. However we have made investments across the club that we believe have set us on the right path.

“We have significantly invested in our recruitment infrastructure… demonstrated by the signing of Maguire, (Daniel) James and Wan-Bissaka, who have all settled in well.

“We will continue with our strategy to promote the best of the players graduating from our academy together with material investment in the coming summers to strengthen our young squad further and challenge for trophies.

“I want to reiterate that our ability to make the investments we need to be successful on the pitch is underpinned by our continued strong financial performance.

“Though this season-to-date we have had a mixed start to our Premier League campaign, in Europe, we have qualified for the Europa League knockout stages with two games to spare.

“We have also progressed to the quarter finals of the League Cup, while our Women’s team has also started their first season in the Women’s Super League season in excellent form.”

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon against Sheffield United in the Premier League (4:30pm kick off).
