Jean was born on December 30, 1944, and grew up in the village of Woolley near Wakefield.

She opened up about her childhood in an interview with the Yorkshire Post back in 2009.

She told the publication: “I have very fond memories of a happy childhood, and going to the village school – long closed now, of course.

“We’d stretch a line across the road and make that into our ‘tennis net’. There was so little traffic back then that we rarely had to take it down.”

The star went on to explain how growing up in Yorkshire influenced her work, as she was the only Yorkshire-born cast member in Last of the Summer Wine.

She said: “Summer Wine – doesn’t that say it all? I’ve been playing Marina for 24 years now, and I never tire of her.”

Jean added: “And you know the funny thing – the series is about Yorkshire folk in a Yorkshire setting, and I’m the only Yorkshire-born person in the cast.

“Most of the rest of them come from across the border. Imposters!”
