The Crown season 3 review: Olivia Colman is sensational as she replaces Claire Foy

Erin Doherty as the fiery and straight-talking Princess Anne also deserves a mention. She’s a formable figure and has touches of Princess Margaret but less cavalier than her aunt. Doherty plays it so well and has become The Crown’s new favourite princess.

The Crown creator Peter Morgan has done an excellent job with season three. Of course, viewers will have their favourite versions of Princess Margret or the Duke of Windsor but even with the cast change viewers very quickly get used to the new performers with the actors simply playing characters we’re already familiar with.

The only downside to the cast revamp is this time the stars are well-known, whereas part of the charm of the first set of actors was their lower profiles which allowed audiences to lose themselves in the characters.

From a narrative standpoint, season three continues with the same themes of the pressures of ruling and the personal and public faces of the Royal Family. Morgan has also created a neat symmetry between characters as they face similar conflicts over the years.

Whether the events depicted are historically or factually accurate remains to be seen with the series already hitting the headlines, however, it makes for cracking drama.

The Crown season 3 will be released on Netflix tomorrow
