Earthquake today: Hawaii hit by earthquake sending shocks along Ring of Fire

An earthquake was reported at 6.36am local time on Monday morning. The quake occurred 16 miles from Waimea, Hawaii.

The Ring of Fire is home to most of the planet’s earthquakes and volcanoes.

According to National Geographic, 90 percent of the Earth’s earthquake occurs along the path of the Ring of Fire.

The ring is also home to 75 percent of the world’s volcanoes.

Along the ring of fire, the border between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates is known as a transform boundary.

The plates move sideways past one another, therefore generating a large number of earthquakes.
