The surprise Fox hit The Masked Singer goes to great lengths to keep the identities of their contestants from viewers, dropping just a few cryptic hints in their weekly clue packages until the respective performers take off their masks. And, Ken Jeong says that the show is just as serious about keeping the identity of their contestants from the judges, and they take extreme measures to make sure they avoid each other.
The 50-year-old doctor-turned-actor recently told Us Weekly that everyone on the show is separated, and that’s how he wants it to be.
“They try to keep us very separate. Separate hallway, separate building. They’re in trailers, we’re in dressing rooms. Air conditioned,” said Jeong. “But, at the same time, if I see someone in a mask in one of those, I always move and leave because I really try to keep it pure. … I just don’t want to have any idea.”
The Hangover star says that there have been times when he has panicked when he sees a contestant in their mask and costume walking down a hallway, and he says that it all of a sudden feels like a horror movie, so he has to leave.
Jeong – who is part of the judges panel along with Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke, and Nicole Sherzinger – says that the Blurred Lines singer takes things a step further and wears a blindfold when he is backstage so he doesn’t spoil the contestant reveals for himself.
The Community alum joked that Thicke wears the blindfold so people won’t look at him and make eye contact. And, he added that his friendship this season with Thicke is “really blossoming” and now the singer is one of his best friends. Ken Jeong says that their relationship has taken off to another level, and now they enjoy roasting each other.
So far this season, The Masked Singer has revealed five contestants – figure skater Johnny Weir, YouTuber Ninja, boxing champ Laila Ali, celebrity therapist Dr. Drew Pinski, and former David Letterman sidekick, Paul Shaffer.

The show recently took a break because of Fox’s coverage of the 2019 World Series between the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals, but The Masked Singer will return to Fox on Wednesday nights once the series is over.
