The image features a pail dot – the asteroid – among a field of blurry star trails.
Dr Masi said: “The image above is quite exceptional, considering how faint and fast-moving this rock is.
“At the imaged time, asteroid 2019 UB8 was about 1.3 millions of kilometres from the Earth and it was on its way approaching us.
“This 4.3 to 9.5 metres large asteroid will reach its minimum distance – 190,000km – from us on October 29, 2019, at 6.30am UTC.
“Of course there are no risks at all for our planet.”
