Great British Bake Off: The 5 most spectacular baking disasters you will never forget

Great British Bake Off has taken the nation by storm ever since it exploded onto television screens nine years ago. On Tuesday evening, the winner of the tenth series will be announced after they turn on their ovens for the final Signature Bake, Technical and Showstopper. In the meantime, Express.co.uk has looked back at the five most iconic moments from the popular baking show. But which one is your favourite?

5. Muffin Mayhem

Throughout the years, the presenters have not only kept the contestants upbeat and motivated, but they have had the occasional hand in making the finish touches and getting their bakes ready on time.

During the fourth series, contestants had to take part in bread week and during the episode, Sue did her rounds and spoke to several contestants about their creations.

Howard Middleton was proud to show off his breakfast muffins but as Sue took a closer look, she leaned on the cooling rack which was holding the most recent bakes as they cooled down.

“Howard, I need to break something to you,” Sue confessed. “I’ve flattened your muffins.”

4. Tennis court error

During the year when Nadiya Hussain was crowned the winner, fellow baker Mat Riley left judges and viewers alike astounded when he decided to bake his icing.

It was Victorian Week and the remaining contestants were tasked with making a game pie, a fruit cake with a ‘tennis court’ topping and finishing off with a Charlotte Russe Showstopper.

But it was during the Technical when Mat made a fatal error and confessed his mistake to Nadiya.

Having decided to create a tennis court net to decorate his fruit cake with, he explained to Nadiya his disappointment at the decorations end result.

“It’s yellow! I probably left it in the oven too long,” he said.

Startled by his revelation, Nadiya questioned: “Oven?”

Nevertheless, this wasn’t the least of his worries as the Showstopper proved too difficult for him to tackle and he was sent home.

3. Bloodbath at Bake Off!

Moments of high drama usually involve burnt cakes or ‘soggy bottoms’ but not during series three when John Whaite had to withdraw from the round because he had nearly cut his finger off.

Instead of passing over the incident, producers decided to show viewers close-up shots of the hand leaving many viewers taking to Twitter to complain, branding the moment as a bloodbath“.

Explaining the moment, John said: “I’m having to start again because I stupidly – it’s my own fault – I put my finger in the Magimix and just slid it across the blade. It’s just knocked me off balance a little but I’ll be alright.”

However, the contestant was forced to sit down when he complained of feeling dizzy and blood starting filling his glove and proceeded to pour down his arm.

Luckily there was a doctor in the tent to attend to the emergency situation and he was removed from the set and sought medical attention.

2. Custard stealing

Back in 2013, series four saw Deborah Manger make a terrible mistake when she used fellow contestant Howard Middleton’s custard.

It came after the bakers were tasked with making a trifle and a key component of the dessert was the custard.

After a brief discussion with one another about the flavours they were using, Howard was seen walking around the tent confused, looking for his custard.

“I’m so sorry Howard,” Deborah said as Sue Perkins came to her rescue and asked: “What’s happened?”

“I used Howard’s custard by error. They were both in the same fridge and I forgot what my bowl was. I haven’t used it all but I am really upset,” Deborah explained.

It was then revealed how Deborah had given her custard to Howard for him to be able to complete his dessert with.

“It’s either a terrible error or the most incredible case of baking espionage I’ve ever seen!” Sue joked.

As for whether or not it ruined Howard’s chances of staying in the competition, it was in fact Deborah who left the competition that week.

1. #BinGate and the Baked Alaska

It is arguably the most standout moment of Great British Bake Off history – #bingate. Back in series five, contestant Diana Beard removed Iain Watters’ Baked Alaska from the freezer and left it on the side of her work bench.

With only 15 minutes until they had to present their dessert, the temperature of the tent was soaring above 25 degrees celsius and therefore the ice cream began melting.

In a blind panic, Iain was seen scouring the freezers for his ice cream and Diana hollered a response: “It’s here sorry Iain.”

Screaming in frustration at his dessert now representing “soup”, Diana argued: “You’ve got your own freezer haven’t you?”

Distraught at the state of his Baked Alaska, presenter Sue Perkins tried to help him figure out a way to present it to the judges, but instead Iain “had a better idea” and decided to bin it instead.

Fans were furious with Diana’s behaviour with many insisting she had sabotaged Iain’s chances in the show.

Paul Hollywood jumped in to defend the baker and the BBC also issued a statement: “Diana removing Iain’s ice cream from the freezer for less than a minute was in no way responsible for Iain’s departure.”

Great British Bake Off 2019 concludes on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 with the final.
